CNC Machining Materials
CNC machining supports a wide range of materials, which can generally be divided into metal materials and non-metal materials. Each material is selected based on specific requirements such as strength, precision, cost, and corrosion resistance.
1. Metal Materials for CNC Machining
Aluminum Alloys
Common grades: 6061, 7075
Aluminum is lightweight, easy to machine, and cost-effective, with excellent thermal conductivity.
Applications: Electronic enclosures, mechanical parts, aerospace components
Stainless Steel
Common grades: 304, 316, 420
Stainless steel offers high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, though it is more difficult to machine.
Applications: Medical devices, food processing equipment, precision components
Carbon Steel & Alloy Steel
Common types: 1045 steel, 40Cr
These materials provide high strength and wear resistance and can be heat-treated for enhanced performance.
Applications: Gears, shafts, molds
Copper and Copper Alloys
Types: Brass, pure copper, bronze
Copper materials have excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, along with good corrosion resistance.
Applications: Electrical components, heat sinks, decorative parts
Titanium Alloys
Common grade: Ti-6Al-4V
Titanium offers high strength, low weight, and superior resistance to heat and corrosion, but it is expensive and difficult to machine.
Applications: Aerospace parts, medical implants
Magnesium Alloys
Magnesium is extremely lightweight and easy to machine but has lower strength and is prone to oxidation.
Applications: Lightweight structural parts, electronic housings
2. Non-Metal Materials for CNC Machining
Engineering Plastics
Common types include:
ABS: Low cost, easy to machine
POM (Acetal): High stiffness and wear resistance
Nylon (PA): Excellent toughness
Polycarbonate (PC): Transparent and impact-resistant
PEEK: High-performance plastic with excellent heat resistance
Applications: Structural parts, gears, housings, insulation components
Acrylic (PMMA)
Acrylic offers high transparency and a smooth surface finish.
Applications: Display components, light covers, panels
Composite Materials
Examples: Carbon fiber, fiberglass
These materials provide high strength and low weight.
Applications: Aerospace, sports equipment
Wood / MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
Less common in high-precision machining, mainly used for prototypes and models.
3. Key Factors When Choosing CNC Materials
When selecting materials for CNC machining, consider the following factors:
Strength and hardness requirements
Precision and surface finish
Corrosion and heat resistance
Cost and budget
Machining difficulty and production volume
