Commonly Used Stamping Processes For Sheet Metal Parts And Their Applications

Oct 07, 2023

1. Cutting

Shearing is a common stamping process, usually used for shearing flat materials. Commonly used shearing equipment in sheet metal manufacturing include shears, decoilers, etc. The shearing process is suitable for steel plates and metal materials of various thicknesses, and the cutting tools can be replaced to meet the needs of different materials and workpieces.

2. Punching

Punching is a process in which a hole is cut by transferring the shape of the steel plate around the tool to the tool through a mold. The mold shape and hole pattern used for punching can be customized according to needs. The punching process is often used to produce various opening parts, such as heat dissipation holes, exhaust holes, forming holes, etc. Punching equipment mainly includes punching machines and CNC punch machines.

3. Bending

The bending process works by bending flat sheets or strips into the desired shape. The bending process usually uses a bending machine or a roller bending machine. During the bending process, the material will undergo plastic deformation under load, so the bending selection should be based on the bending performance of the material and the shape of the tool.

4. Stretching

The drawing process refers to drawing flat materials into workpieces of a certain length and width, and is usually used to produce drawn parts of different shapes. During the stretching process, plastic deformation of the material is required, so the selection of the stretching process should be based on the tensile properties of the material and the shape of the tool.

5. Forging

The forging process is to put metal materials into a heating furnace, heat them to a certain temperature, and then forge the materials to form workpieces. Compared with other stamping processes, the forging process can obtain better material properties and directional properties by retaining the characteristics of the material particle structure. However, due to the complexity and high cost of forging equipment, it is not commonly used in sheet metal processing. To sum up, the commonly used stamping processes in sheet metal processing include shearing, punching, bending, stretching and other processes. Appropriate process equipment and tools can be selected for processing according to needs. For some special sheet metal parts processing needs, other stamping processes such as forging can also be used.
